Not long ago I've had a bit of mishap by deleting some of my very important pictures (birth of my kid). With the first shock I couldn't find quickly any free software for undeleting.
After calming down I've found the following two:

But instead I decided to use the performance tools in control panel and I made serious maintenance plus I turned off some features like visual styles.
An improvment in performance was immediate. And then suddenly a baloon pops up from my system tray explaining that there are solutions to my Vista problems (format? :-)). Desiring the better performance I follow the link and download the update. For all here's the link to KB article from which you can download the update for 32-bit or 64-bit Windows Vista.

After installing the patch and restart - the difference is obvious. Performance is better.
The best performance improvement I notice is that my SharePoint Designer crashes immediately instead of freezing for 2 minutes first :-)
I use a lot of remote desktop to manage access to clients or servers. But after installing Windows Vista on my computer, this has been virtually impossible. When I tried to remotely connect it got the connection, but it slowed down or completely froze so it wasn't possible to even log on.
Finally I've found a solution for the slow remote desktop problem here.
It was needed to run the command prompt as administrator and disable auto tuning for the TCP/IP receive window. If you're having the same problem use command
netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled
To reenable it enter
netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=normal
And remote desktop magically started working!Even though I've had Flash player installed in my Windows Vista, there was a funny error. In some cases I could see the flash videos and in some cases no (like on SoapBox or YouTube. I've found the solution to the problem.
Below is the recording on how to fix the problem.Some time ago I've had the craziest problem with one of my friend's computer. After she installed one player, everything that she wanted to run (like for example Word, Outlook, games,...) - EVERYTHING started that player with an error message. I went almost crazy looking for solution. That's why I want to point it out here if anyone will ever have the same problem:
What happened is that the .exe extension got associated with that player (like for example some media type like .mp3 associates with windows media player). So basically when we tried to run any .exe - program file it was understanding to run that player and open .exe in it.
Crazy. I couldn't fix the registry, because regedit is also .exe file.
This is what saved me and my friend's computer.
